- 요약Vocal adaptation arises from dynamic interactions among evolutionary, developmental, and cognitive processes, shaping vocal behavior in distinct yet interconnected ways. Evolutionarily, we argue that cooperative breeding illustrates how social structure drives vocal adaptation in humans and marmoset monkeys. Human infants, which are altricial and energetically demanding, rely on flexible vocalizations to attract caregiver attention. We contrast Old World monkeys against marmosets, which are also vocal learners with cooperative breeding behavior, to show vocal adaptation emerging from social structure and brain plasticity.Developmentally, we argue that vocal adaptation begins with motor exploration, marked by early vocal variability across species such as humans, chimpanzees, zebra finches, Egyptian fruit bats, and marmosets. Our computational model shows that exploratory behavior during critical periods enhances vocal learning, while early dependence on social feedback may hinder biomechanical mastery. Abrupt acoustic shifts in infant marmosets reveal punctuated developmental transitions shaped by trade-offs between energetic cost and communicative efficiency, another instance of adaptation emerging from body maturation and social constraints.Cognitively, we show that vocal adaptation relies on active sampling. Real-time marmoset interactions show that vocalizations are used strategically to explore their social environment and gather information, not merely to elicit responses. Synthesizing these insights, we propose an integrative framework emphasizing the universality of transitions from exploration to exploitation in the process of vocal adaptation. That framework can be modeled via behavioral landscapes, which captures the interplay among social and non-social factors across evolution, development, and cognition to explain vocal adaptation and behavioral flexibility more broadly.
