- 요약Glamour is situated at the nexus of aesthetics, consumerism, identity, and performance. Despite its ephemerality, glamour takes on identifiable visual codes and emerges through embodied performance as it comes into view under particular historical circumstances. Glamour Against the Grain: Fashioning Identity in Postwar American Commercial Spaces, 1955-1970examines three instances of glamour that exist within frames distinguished by three different types of commercial space: the department store, the boutique, and the fashion show. Yet, the specific sites centered in this study----the Neiman Marcus department store in Dallas, Texas, the "Youthquake" boutiques that opened on New York's Madison Avenue, and the touring Ebony Fashion Fair----fundamentally deviate from the historically white, urban, heteronormative, and upper-middle class frameworks of traditional glamour as defined by Hollywood and the Parisian couture industry. In charting an otherwise overlooked glamour, this dissertation reveals a more malleable conception of what glamour can encompass, to whom it can speak, and where it can emerge. By relying on a close examination of objects of study in multiple media----fashion, photography, window display, architecture----and an interdisciplinary methodology rooted in art history and performance studies, this dissertation is positioned not only to retheorize glamour in a nuanced and inclusive manner, but also to reveal the ways in which the phenomenon both shapes and reflects social, political, and cultural concerns unique to postwar American experience.
