- 요약Pennsylvania has high rates of Lyme disease, a vector-borne illness that can cause flu-like symptoms and heart and nervous system issues if untreated (CDC, 2021; Parish, 2023). Although Lyme disease may be associated with rural or forested areas, people living in urban areas can also be at risk (Katro & Rosenfeld, 2023). This study explored digital messaging strategies around Lyme disease communication efforts, with specific interest in what strategies are used to communicate with urban audiences. In study 1, linguistic agency assignment and the use of clickbait-style headlines were experimentally tested as strategies to potentially increase curiosity, engagement, risk perceptions, preventative behavioral intentions, and information seeking intentions about Lyme disease. In study 2, professionals (N= 10) who educate, communicate, or do outreach about Lyme disease as a component of their professional responsibilities were interviewed to shed light on applying these theoretical strategies to real-world health campaigns.Drawing on the EPPM and theories of curiosity, a 3 (linguistic agency: human, tick threat, disease threat) X 3 (headline: list, forward reference, summary) online experiment was conducted on Prolific (N= 1190) with Pennsylvania residents. Results showed no advantage of using tick or disease threat agency compared to human assignment agency on any persuasive outcomes. However, moderation analyses revealed that both tick and Lyme disease threat (vs. human) agency assignment led to greater severity perceptions for low-involvement individuals. Messages with Lyme disease agency generated higher severity perceptions, which then led to higher preventative behavioral intentions for low involvement individuals. The opposite pattern was found for fear perceptions among medium and high involvement individuals; the human agency message (vs. Lyme disease message) led to more fear perceptions. Supporting the EPPM's predictions, severity, susceptibility, fear, and efficacy perceptions positively predicted preventative behavioral intentions. Thus, messages eliciting these reactions may help encourage people to take preventative actions against ticks.There was no difference in any of the three headlines on perceptions of curiosity, reading intention, or sharing intention. However, the summary headline led to greater credibility perceptions than the clickbait-style headlines. Interview participants expressed hesitation to use clickbait-style strategies to facilitate engagement with Lyme disease and tick information. Taken together with the experimental results, clickbait strategies do not currently show much promise as a Lyme disease communication strategy. However, other curiosity-arousing strategies, such as "do you know" questions and visuals were mentioned by interviewees as strategies that could arouse curiosity. These curiosity strategies deserve further empirical testing.Interview results also suggest the value of using multiple engagement strategies, like social media, web resources, tabling at community events, and in-person presentations to reach various audiences. While participants do not seem to be targeting messages much differently for urban versus rural audiences, they adapt messages differently for groups based on hobbies, interests, and activities that can put people at risk (e.g., gardeners, hunters, pet owners). Using visuals, appealing to care for children and pets, and highlighting personal relevance were shared as effective ways to communicate with audiences across outreach tactics and groups.Taken together, the results of this study support the EPPM's propositions that severity, susceptibility, fear, and efficacy perceptions will predict message-compliant behavioral intentions. Although there was no main effect of linguistic agency assignment, threat agency assignment may work better for low-involvement audiences on some persuasive outcomes. Future research should investigate other curiosity-arousing strategies to use in public health campaigns around tick prevention, such as questions and visuals to encourage attention and engagement with the message.
