- 요약Climate change, reproductive health, and population policy are some of the most pressing issues of our time. Adopting a reproductive justice theory framework, I conceptualize climate variability as a contextual factor that potentially limits individuals' ability to exercise reproductive autonomy. I merge temperature and precipitation data from the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit (CRU) with geo-coded fertility and health data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) across South Asia. In Chapter 1, I introduce this dissertation, provide a brief substantive overview of each chapter, describe the climate context in South Asia, and offer an overview of the data used. For Chapter 2, I examine the impact of temperature and precipitation variability on women's fertility goals. I find that, generally, high precipitation is associated with reduced fertility goals and longer ideal birth intervals. In Chapter 3, I test how climate anomalies impact miscarriage, stillbirth, and abortion. Temperature and precipitation irregularities impact all types of pregnancy loss, but the timing of exposure is critical. Results also indicate that women with low education levels bear the brunt of this burden. Chapter 4 examines how irregular temperature and precipitation exposures impact child relocation away from their mother's household. While I find that, overall, anomalies reduce the likelihood of child relocation, after periods of high precipitation, girls are at increased risk of being relocated away from their mother's residence. Finally, in Chapter 5, I draw broad conclusions and discuss directions for future research, highlighting that climate anomalies undermine reproductive autonomy and require greater scholarly and policy attention.
